It quite ain't the Stelvio....
....nor the Silvretta....

....but none of those have some turd-rattling gravel-steepness, dooohh.
Here's the hunt for some of that around the local Melbourne hills...and Mt. Dandenong in particular.

Warming up...the steeeep bit on Sheffield Rd.

....with a promise of more to come.
Montrose end of the Old Coach Rd.

The top at Kalorama offers some sweet views across the Eastern Suburbs and
Mebourne CBD skyscrapers

Sweet, innit?

Looking north (towards Toolangi) from Falls Rd., Olinda

DandySteep_06.JPG

Magnificent views across the Yarra Valley from the RJ Hamer Arboretum carpark....Toolangi and Kinglake ranges in the background.

There was a whisper of....Hacketts Rd., a bit of an infamous stretch....known for prangs and dramas.... and often marked as "no through road"....which is, what it most probably should be... at least at the moment.

Fantastic views past the Gardens to Westernport Bay

The Husky about to leap over the edge

Shortly after that it's a frantic dance of the ABS trying to hammer the shit outta the right boot.
While the rear is overtaking the front down some bombed out and heavily graveled pothole-heaven with barely a clean strip of bare earth to be found to slow things down before the cross-roading asphalt and whizzing cars at the bottom of it all.
It'd all be fine it they'd left the friggin gravel off it!!
YES, IT'S STEEEP!! :kna
And NO...it's NOT a one-way!!

Back up has the tail tying itself into knots, 1/2" gravel everywhere.
Good fun

35% on a dirt road not steep enough, Hans? Maybe someone can do steeper? Please feel free to share.......

.... think I recognise that 35deg sign ........ Can't beat it Goodie, but this one turns to gravel at the signed pitch shortly after this pic (the little road between Puffing Billy and Glenharrow in Belgrave) -

Old Monbulk?
Will go and check it out ...there's a few more around Belgrave/Upwey/ FTG, like the Serpentine track, the supershort Kemp St. gravel, Bellbrook might be closed nowadays, the Hillside Cres hairpin and tiny carpark above Lady's Knoll/ old FTG quarry (used to have great views....even saw some campers there a long time back.)...etc. etc

Tassie Daddy
15% feels pretty steep. 35% would almost make you feel you were standing straight up whilst sitting on a cruiser...

asphalt

Tassie...where tyres are flat and nights are long

Sorry, no pics from riding the steep sections - we were just too busy keeping the bikes upright. :)

Also, photos never do justice when you try to capture an incline.
