The Lees Valley Road....

Oh yeah!!!
Some nice piccies there

I dumped my fully loaded 950 Adventure about 10 foot in front of where the XT is while on my own. You're a fair walk from nowhere out there if you get stuck.

It's moments like these.....

....when you wish for a 250/ 400 instead :so

It sure would be a damn long walk out...either end of it.
And the big Katoom's too heavy to stand on the tailpipe to get the water out by by yourself, too.

Yeah, you're right, one LOOKS in control! :guff

I'm seriously glad that the only wetting occurred from my dismount into the little puddle on the Benmore track, noone dropped a bike in any of the deeper, rockier crossings. Tassie Dave nearly got his jocks wet from the force of water up his riding pants a couple of times though! :icon-maffick-:

Barely an hour later, things have turned into a colourless, overcast morning.
The innocent, little sign to yesterday afternoon’s delights just doesn’t let on what’s hiding in the back country. Hope, they'll keep it that way!!

Just a quick blurt up for another look from that first, grassy knoll of the Lees Valley Rd.

After last nights accommodation....men can’t live on dead flies alone!!

Nev hits the jackpot with his choice at the Oxford “Seagars Designer-Café” (some local stewpot-guru) cholesterol-bomb....

....while Rob’s pretty suss about that arty-farty muesli.

Yeah, it’s one of those places....order a coffee and you’ll get a bloody Van Gogh.

The rest of the little town seems to be more down to earth, at least they’ve got some decent speed limits for the hoons of the local retirement village.

Time to get onto the bikes and move towards Christchurch....

NZ_SI_2012_1070c.JPG

....to pick up a fresh hoop for Bernard’s XT while passing through, tripping over some unusual stuff in the industrial estate that the Yamaha Shop is at....

...before zipping through the Lyttelton Tunnel and following the shoreline drive to Governors Bay.

NZ_SI_2012_1073.JPG

Turning onto the Summit Rd. makes for a great ride, fantastic views and the endless bends of the Banks Peninsula, a true playpen for bikes.
It’s an endless maze of narrow, often sealed, roads leading into a myriad of small bays and harbours.
slobber.gif

Spent anything from a couple of hours to a few days (taking in the dirt-roads as well) and the Peninsula won’t disappoint, not for a minute.

And all that, before adding any of the tourist stuff !!

“No way I’ m going home dirty!!”

NZ_SI_2012_1094.JPG

Finally!! The first pack/ pannier to shit itself. There are a few getting close, though...

NZ_SI_2012_1095.JPG

What a great donk that 660 is!!
By the time we were done, one of the bikes had clocked an eyebrow-lifting 67.000 rental-k’s and was still running sweet as punch, didn’t use a drop of oil or showed any signs of “weakening” anywhere.

A BIG credit to the guys like Hakan who look after them so well!!

In fact, not one of the bikes had any failures, problems, mishaps or whatever for the whole trip, apart from a dusty/ dirty contact in the BM’s switchblock and a single flat tyre (thanks Christ! I HATE fixing tyres!!).
mad.gif

The rest was a weeping fork-seal and a few cableties here and there, for wear and tear items awaiting a more proper fix.

NZ_SI_2012_1096.JPG

Like a better solution to the duct-tape on that numberplate.

NZ_SI_2012_1097.JPG

In the end it took 6 people, a stack of fence palings, lots of swearing and another bag of laughs to get that tyre changed (by hand) on the MIGHTY250.

Surprisingly, it turned out a centre-spoked tubeless rim and breaking the bead by hand was a bitch! Had to build some jig to lever it against the fence, which nearly lifted the fenceposts out of the ground.

And that’s what the 2 weeks of Comedy-Show was based on
laughing.gif

....in the “organized” corner:

NZ_SI_2012_1100.JPG

And...in the other corner:

NZ_SI_2012_1101.JPG

The rest was easy...have the 2 guys sharing a room and the ribbing and jibes started within 10 seconds after arrival....and never stopped for the rest of the stay.
Talk about hilarious, talk about wetting yourself...talk about the agitated murmur sounding through the walls long after the lights went off, giggling myself to sleep.
Thanks guys...it was bloody AWESOME. You're absolute CHAMPS!!

More laughter, more stories, more bull, more bellyshaking gasps for air, tears of mirth....yet another dinner on-the-road.

NZ_SI_2012_1103.JPG

Perhaps next time, we could all squeeze in THERE and have some fun?

NZ_SI_2012_1104.JPG

Well, that’s it.

2 weeks of stumping delights of NZ’s South Island, 2 weeks of excitement and great riding, 2 weeks of seeing new things and going new places....incredible places!!!...2 weeks of laughter, fun, sheer joy ....and silent giggles....and quiet, private moments standing at the edge of the road overlooking the valleys and mountains, the soul going walkabouts.
laola.gif

2 weeks I’d LOVE to relive over and over!!

A huge...HUGE... THANKS to everyone involved...those who made it possible, like Hakan and all the folks who allowed us to stay for a night, cooked up a storm for the crew and lots more....but mostly those who were along day after day, constantly helping out in many little ways to make it a truly enjoyable trip.

I pulls me hat to you!!

And...ahem...there’s still lots of unfinished business in the South, didn’t get around to 19 out of the 36 targets on the “wishlist”.

That list has since blown out to 40+ with the help of EddieB here on the forum.

And I’ve heard the first rumbles of the rumour mill about a MK.2 for March 2013 or ‘14 in the making...hmmmmm...just don’t pay any attention!!!!
