Assuming Owaka or Pounawea as a starting point, one can stay anywhere along the route and return-to-base at the end of the day.



Cathedral Caves Access:

The Caves are open for visiting between late October and May. Sometimes spring tides delay the opening a few weeks.
Access is limited to two hours before low tide and up to one hour after low tide. It is not available before 7.30am or after 8.30pm. Please refer to the tide timetables.
The walk one-way takes about 30 minutes. Do not disturb wildlife ( sea lions, penguins) you see on the beach or in the Caves.
Be prepared to get your feet wet as there are often seawater pools forming in the sandy floor of the caves.
A torch (flashlight) will be useful for the dimly lit inner reaches. The caves are not open for visiting at night.
A few smaller caves are located further along the cliffs but visitors should be wary of incoming tides and getting cut off. There is no alternative track back to the car park.
Insect repellent is necessary sometimes.

There is Mandeville...there's a biiig paddock of short-cut grass and a small sign at the roadside....a rusty post with a windsock and a couple of big sheds....a restored steam loco they found in the Mataura River at the end of the runway after it was dumped there over 100 years ago to create a fishing-pond... there's a museum of exquisitely restored DeHavilland aircraft, early NZ aviation artifacts and historic planes....


...AND THEN THERE'S THE RESTORATION WORKSHOP TO WALK THROUGH, GAZE AND ASK QUESTIONS, WATCH PISTONS GETTING CAST AND VALANCED GUARDS HAND-DENGELT INTO THEIR CURVED SHAPES.

The craft, the passion, the art...the store of parts, the tools....and above all: the people doing their work.

No way out: this one gives you a dry mouth and watering eyes. And no, I'm NO aviation buff, but this one knocked my sox off.
