[STICKY]My Pic Of The Day

Towing fee for the ST1300 & trailer from Cobrungra to Bairnsdale was in the order of $2500. Probably charged out as supply of plant & labour at around $500 per hour. Nice little earner for around a five hour job and 300km round trip, aye?

Perhaps the following should be in an insurance or crash thread, but here goes ....

I remember discussing withdrawing the insurance claim with Swann, the claims advisor explained that I would then need to pay the tow fee - sounds plausible.

When @Dougman & I went to Bairnsdale to pick-up my personal effects and trailer from Bairnsdale I checked with the towing people, they said the bike wouldn't be released until the fee was paid, Swann or me, they didn't care - sounds plausible.

Mmmm .... who authorised the towing? Not me, I wasn't there when the bike & trailer were picked-up! Perhaps I did before, they put me in the back of the ambulance. WTF did I do when I was doped up following a couple of green whistles and a jab of morphine? Could I be responsible for my actions under those circumstances? It was a very stressful time. In the end, the $2500 hanging in limbo, led to the claim proceeding.
Towing for an accident on a public road is handled by VicPol via the Towing Allocation System which is administered by the Department of Transport.

This was bought in years ago because towies were showing up to accidents and bashing the crap out of each other with metal bars to get the allocations.

It is heavily regulated now, just like most things are.

Yeah, no qualms with the towing and / or how it's allocated.

My point is though, I didn't authorise the towing but was expected to fork out $2500. If it wasn't for this figure, I wouldn't have proceeded with the claim and repaired it myself (well which Pete did, with some of my help). I'd guessed repairs would be in the order of $1000 (which they ended up being), and I would have avoided VIV, unregistered vehicle permit, RWC, registration fees and buy back cost, which totalled another $2500.

I would have been better leaving it on the side of the road, sure it would have been stolen, trashed, whatever, but then an insurance claim would have returned a very tasty figure, and I would have been far better off.

Re. tow truck allocation, many years ago (probably in the 60's) my grandmother lived on the northside of the Maroondah Highway at a bend, many many run off road crashes, local towies would slip Ma a fiver or tenner if she called them first and they got the job. I recall her stories about the towies wars.
