NZ_24 - A South Island Adventure Odyssey

:bs

But who the hell would buy VB in NZ where there is so much excellent local-brew around?
Speight's Old Dark proved a good find, as did a few others (CHC Harringtons etc).
Agree though...the place has gotten pretty expensive all around. (pretty much like Tassie, apparently).
I agree, pic for attention only. Too many good local beers here.
Some people must be buying VB here though.
Its still a lovely place to be expenses aside.

Map isn't quite complete as Gmaps strikes on the last bit. Extend the southern end of the route to around Otematata, then a little to the east to Kurow, end of day.
The missing bit is a private toll road, the Blackforest Station Track or Lake Benmore Track, depending on who one talks to.
"Te Aka Rd" is the latest, official name that just about nobody uses.

Anyone for a lift to Breakfast?
Yo, Mt. Hutt, Christchurch's home ski-mountain is just up the road.

Not an hour later....the Grand Nickelodeon in Geraldine :)

It's time to get out of the Canterbury Plains and into the hills. I can already small Otago, the bare hills, the crazy and bizarre rocks strewn all over the High Country, the snow across the Alpine Tops....not far now.
Dodging the SH79 highway to Fairlie (itself a sweet, curvy 45km long affair), there is better to be had. Greatly unknown and traffic-free, too.

Scenery and views by the bucketload nearly along the entire length....the ~20km of ridge-coasting makes Spur Rd. a rare find.

The northern end near Fairlie

Fairlie is jam-packed with all those tourists that got wind of the WestCoast route being blocked....let's grab lunch at the bakery and get out of here, back into the countryside, farms and gravel.

MacKenzies Pass

MacKenzies Basin....and the Southern Alps Main Ridge in all its glory....ohhh maan!! :slob:slob

...another quick look back....

Haldon Station School....still in use by the looks of it.

The pollen of the trees covers the road 2" deep.

2024_NZ_SI_235.JPG

Did the phone call and got the ok and code for the gate on the other side earlier, road fees are in the honesty-box....this is IT, SHOWTIME!!
Even as someone who's done this stretch in both directions time and again over the years....this thing makes the hair stand up every time.
Anything small going wrong here...

First saw a pic of someone riding the Blackforest Station Track a good 20 years ago but couldn't find any info or even location on it for a couple of years.
Then I found a name on the net, then a rough location...but specifics were pretty wishywashy.
Rode it first when it was $7?/8? per bike and we had to call ahead on the landline at least 2 days for the code of the lock, also had to pay at the Station Office in person...cash only (the last bit still stands, don't show up with your Visa or I-watch or something)

An incredible and never-to-be-forgotten ride both ways, it's best going North to South, like in this case.

NOT for anyone with vertigo...or feeling squeamish about heights and sheer drops.

That rockflow was a bastard this time....nearly came off myself in those deep rock-channels/ berms near the exit.

Dave pissing off for a cold drink into the blue yonder once through the gate was just about some comic relief (if not a major worry knowing him to struggle to find his way into his own garage at home)

Welcome to the '60s @ the Kurow Pub....the bike parking is still at the rear deliveries area among all the discarded bits and bobs, the outside fire-emergency staircase " has 2 bad steps, don't use it" nowadays....but the beer is still cold and a couple of the old thunderboxes upstairs have been renovated.
They actually flush now. :bigrofl:
