Another hour north on the Autobahn got us to the Lueneburg Heathlands, a well known tourist area south of Hamburg famous for its 4-weeks-a-year "purple dress" when the low heath shrubs bloom and turn the whole landscape purple.
Poor sandy soil, resulting from deforestation for firewood to boil-out the "White Gold" (salt) found under the town of Lueneburg, it's turned nature upside down to fill the pockets of the salt-barons (and church) 800 years ago. The heath-spectacle now drives the tourist industry and all the hangers-on. Spud farming is big, so is corn, some small herds of brumbys and a special breed of sheep , the Heidschnucke, essential in keeping the heathlands going https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidschnucke
as well as the beekeeping and honey industry creating some incredible product as a result of that 4week bloom. :glu
On the walking/ cycling tracks by 7am, dodging the masses.

Took the free Heath-Shuttle into Lueneburg town for some of that 800year history and how an inland town became part of the coastal/ shipping-based trading group, the Hanseatic League. (yep, it was the salt mine the town was standing on!)

P1090741.JPG

Due to literally undermining the town, just about nothing is plumb or square in the place. As a result, some very substantial buildings have been demolished including 3 churches, the old city hall, salt-stores etc. Many old and newer buildings are leaning, cracking, sprout bowing brick walls, sagging walls and foundations. the ground underneath the town being honeycombed and the old mine shafts continuously collapsing and washing out.

Another early morning in the heathlands

P1090752.JPG

One of the frequent "Immetuuns" (Imme=local slang for bee) (tuun= local slang for fence).
Historic beehives were sort of upside-down wicker-baskets which got wet with rain, drenching and killing the bees so the farmers built covered stands to protect the hives.
The long, narrow shelters remained in the landscape while the wicker was eventually replaced by waterproof plastic cases.
