Berlin or Dust - we did it again

In the summer 2022 we thought it's time to do it again.
2017 we did our first "Berlin or Dust" trip.

We means: my friends Barbara and Hölli from Austria (Barbara, thank you for the photos!) and me.




The goal was to start somewhere south of Berlin and make our way up to the coastline of the Baltic Sea to find some points of interest. We wanted to use as much dirt roads and small country roads as possible.
This time we bypassed Berlin in the West but included the famous buildings of Potsdam. We all met late in the evening in a hotel near Niemegk. The hotel was very convenient because it is close to the motorway which my friends used to come up from Austria and we could park our trailers on their ground for free. On the map you see the first section around Berlin.

In a short time we made it to Potsdam, which is packed with important historical buildings. If you are interested, you can spent days without end visiting each of them.


We stopped near the New Palais which is from 1769 and hosts today also part of the University of Potsdam. And strolled around





Suddenly Barbara was gone.


She had discovered some young ladies who were kept imprisoned



Can we put the fence down and liberate them?

As I said we wanted to free the Ladies. No success - we were told to leave the place this is not for public!

Ok, so off into the city center of Potsdam. A very vibrant place locals and tourists mix up here.






Now it is time for the woods. The soil here in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg is not very fertile, agriculture in the better places and pine trees in sandy areas.
Actually you can't call this a forest it is more a pine plantation with high density.


It was nice riding and no one around. The smell of raisin was around. Bicycle lane and road, we couldn't figure out what was the right one.

We came out of the forest and found ourselves in the galaxy. The star constellation Orion, the aliens opened up a branch in North Germany.


After this encounter it was time for a break. If you ever come near the town of Kremmen, we highly recommend to stop at the Klubhaus where nowadays the bakery PLENTZ has its home.




As you can see on the table they have everything from beer to cake.

After coffee and cake it is off into the woods again.


We are heading North to Alt Ruppin, from where we follow a dirt road on the east shoreline of the Molchowsee. From there on to Rheinsberg our next stop.



Mecklenburg and parts of Brandenburg are characterized by the slow flowing river Havel, canals and lots of lakes. The whole waterway system is open for small and slow going house boats.




In Rheinsberg we were again greeted by history and looked into the park of castle Rheinsberg.


We were amazed by a low budget houseboat which looked more like a floating garden shed in front of the castle.

The lake is integrated into the park as you can see when you are on the other shore.

After coffee and cake it is off into the woods again.

Nice!
Goodie spent a few days with her mum around the Mueritzer Lakes ....and still can't quit raving about them.
Better put them on the list for the next visit then!

Photo session in Rheinsberg is finished, so we continue north to Neustrelitz of course through the wood and along the lakes.

We didn't want to try, sign says: Ammunition is spread in the area driving in here is life-threatening.


Neustrelitz has a nice market place. We stopped near the harbor for something to drink.




We had reservations in Greifswald an old university town at the Baltic Sea, to reach the town in time for a nice dinner we now had to hurry. Sadly we left the plotted route and headed on the fastest route to Greifswald. In the summer it is absolutely necessary to book hotels in advance, up here tourism is quite intense.

No rain? The skies look dark enough in some of the shots for a bit of a shower here or there.
An in that rush to Greifswald you would have gone juuust past Goodie's birth-place, Guetzkow.
