Won't you take me to Funkytown!

Hytram

<-- now went that way
Every year about this time BT Humble and his loverly wife Minx put on a little shindig at their quaint country residence "Funkytown". This event is affectionately know as the Unaugual, this years was the "Unaugual 8.0" , the 9th running of the Unaugual... Make sense? Good.... :looney:

I think this was my 4th and as per other years I take 2 days getting up there and 2 days in getting back... perfect excuse for a ride. :woot:

A group of us usually stay at the Jingellic Pub on the Murray River on the Friday night but this was booked out this year so Nev booked us in at the Tumbarumba Pub.

I decided to go my own way and meet Nev, Jo, Smack, GS and Moike at the pub for dinner, a few brews and an offer almost to good to refuse ....which I did

The First days route, trying to get the best dirt roads in there and still do 600km for the day. Ended up with a bit over 200km of dirt for the Day

The KTM on Freestone Creek Rd, this road and I have history , the road that killed the Strom

1 km further on from where the Strom died, 32km to go until lunch

The Dargo Store now has a good workshop in the rear of it to take care of any bike problems, the owner rides a 990Adv and rents out XR400s (I think)

Lunch!! a bloody good burger too
bts_fri-106.jpg

Heading up the Dog Graves road I came around a corner to notice a witches hat in the middle of the road, I though to my self WTF! then this!!
It had just reached the top when I came to it, it had gone down... and I mean down, about 200mt a few days before, in the middle of the night on a perfectly straight bit of road, a drunk 18yo drive daddy's mate's 4wd, no one killed, but one of them choppered out. The towie said he picked up about a slab of cans on the way down to attach the rope..

bts_fri-107.jpg

Into Omeo for some fuel and then up through Benambra Corryong Rd, which although is not the prettiest road about, standing on the pegs and belting the KTM thorough it, it has now become one of my favourites. Unfortunately I wasn't logging the GPS at the time, but I reckon I probably average about 75kmh on it, that's with all the twisties... 112km of goodness... I was pumped!!
The 950Adv S is simply amazing at high speed on the dirt, it rides and handles beautifully. I was simply in awe with how this bike handled.

A beautiful little...actually BIG! camping ground on the Benambra Corryong Rd, it reminded me of where the Dargo Rally is held, as I rode in Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds was playing on the iPod, it kinda fitted nicely

these were everywhere, I dont think I have seen them in the flesh before

its was getting late and once I had got to the Murray Valley Hwy i let the GPS take me to Tumbarumba on auto pilot, I was getting tied, those 200km of dirt where all done standing up and at full tilt, it was a great days riding and I had another 3 days to go... WOOT!

Now you didn't pick those mushies, did you?----did you!!
I hope to be doing those roads this weekend,is it going to snow down that way over the next few days? It might be a little cold in the tent, better pack my woollies.
Those days or was it weeks you agonized over which bike was to be your next was worth the time spent . It just looks smik, and made for those roads. Life can be good.
Do you have a favourite camp spot you can recommend on the Barry Way?
Thanks Wardy

Sounds like a great trip Marty.

Oh, Mr & Mrs Zippy said to say :hito you. They mentioned that a friend of theirs had a Strom and wrote it off and now had a KTM. Then the name Marty was mentioned, couldn't believe it.

Why can't we go anywhere that people don't know you from somewhere?

They also said to say hi to Nev and Jo. :D

There's Suggan Buggan....and an endless amount of spots on the banks of the Snowy River, once the road levels out to run along/ just above the river north of the NSW/Vic border.

North of point B the road and river are separated by quite a steep drop, no more access.

There are also a couple of spots near the eastern head of McKillops bridge...not strictly on the Barry Way, but thereabouts.

@Marty....as always, SUPERB shots, mate!!:clap::glu

If you check out each state's national parks websites you'll be able to get a list of the campgrounds which have drop toilet facilities. From memory I think there's Suggan Buggan on the Vic side of the Barry Way and 2 or 3 campgrounds with toilets on the NSW stretch. If that sort of thing is important to you, that is.

Day 2

it was a funny ol' night... the publican had lost the keys to the bike lock up... the locals where hanging out all over the place and the the live entertainment was making love to the microphone....I went to bed....there was a big day tomorrow..

all other years In had gone via Wee Jasper, this year was to be a little more adventurous, "Tracks"

for the first bit I headed off with crew up the Eliot Way, one of those roads in Australia that really is a most do. Its not perfect but it is just "perfect". The only reason it really exists is be cause of the the Tumut 2 power station, a part of the the Snowy Mountain's Hydro Electric Scheme that was build following WW2, and I believe is one of the 12 modern wonders of the industrial world, I love this area for so many reasons, part because I am an electrician, most mostly I am a adventurer and this is prime adventure country.... I love this place

yes, its a GPS....get over it!!! ( oh yes, I think my indicator is on)
bts_sat-108.jpg

finally on the the Broken Cart Track, not a single track bit definitely a single lane track, a few spoon drains and a couple of airborne moments, it was pretty special
bts_sat-109.jpg

bts_sat-110.jpg

a billabong along the way

now, the event that we all came for... the Unaugual 8.0.. its nothing special.... but it is so just so "special"
bts_sat-112.jpg

it always has a bonfire... build to strict standards...lots of freaking wood so there is big freraking flames

this is my favourite photo of the whole trip, not the the best technically, but it has a certain good "massive/small" feel to it (GS in the photo)

sadly I am know around alot of places.... usually for all the wrong reasons :lollol: No your Honour, it is not me naked in that picture with all those goats

O

How's your rear tyre going mileage wise?

!

it was a brand new K60 on it when I started and I did about 2000km over the 4 days, about 600km dirt... I rode the whole lot pretty hard as per usual. I ran the both front (Karoo) and rear at 22psi for the whole trip and never had a moment.

I have scalloped the inside of the outer blocks on it a fair bit, prolly due to the lower pressure, but they really handled well. I should try them a bit harder.

I should see at least 5k out of the rear, maybe 6k+ but I do ride it quite hard, -6k out of a Tourance wasn't uncommon with me on the Strom and I would be lucky to get 3500km out of the TKC rear on the strom

I road the KTM last night in the wet and all I can say is..fun, fun fun when you want it, but scary as hell if you need traction

the heidenau k60 are a great tyre, if you can get them

Lets try this again... I lost the lot

It was the morning after the night before,

breakfast was supplied by BTH and we all packed up and went out separate ways

there were thousands of these tiny spider webs all over the paddocks, covered with dew and glistening in the morning sunlight

bts_sun-101.jpg

the outhouse, with is 12v lighting system....he's a good host that BT :chug:
bts_sun-102.jpg

The Host with the most, on GS's Norge
bts_sun-103.jpg

Not far up the road was The Shoalhaven river, time to practice some sand riding.... No I am not stuck...Yet
bts_sun-104.jpg

Ok, now I am stuck...the K60 are a great tyre...but not for sand, about 10 mins of digging I was on my way
bts_sun-105.jpg

If I rode up the river a whole 100mt I would have come to this and not got bogged, oh well, live and learn.
bts_sun-106.jpg

Stuart's Crossing on the the Shoalhaven River, not at its deepest...well, nowhere near, I very easy crossing, even a VStrom could do it
bts_sun-107.jpg

I didnt take many photos during the day, too busy meandering down towards Cooma way on fine dirt roads.

Mid afternoon I am across this... in the middle of nowhere on the old Bombala Rd, a disused rail line that ran beside an old disused Abattoir
bts_sun-108.jpg

bts_sun-109.jpg

About two weeks before this trip I was reading up on Urban Exploring and came across this place on one of the websites, there was no mention of where it was and I didn't pay alot of attention to it, then 2 weeks later for no reason I came across it, it was a little freaky. Sadly I dint really have time to explore so I took a couple of shots and kept going

Here is the site that I was referring too http://www.urbanadventure.org/members/builds/slaughter.htm
bts_sun-110.jpg

the KTM in its natural environment
bts_sun-111.jpg

Then it was along to Bombala to fill up. Then through Delegate onto McKillops Bridge to fine a camp site for the night..

there I was, camping alone in the middle of nowhere with no one around me except for the million of stars and the sound of the flowing river..... 5 days before I was in a 5 star hotel is Sydney, swap it? no in your flaming life!!

412kms for the day...95% of that was dirt
