Sunny riding weather

Super Térrarist
Last Thursday and I headed out for a bit of a ride, because it was a nice sunny day. Headed north through the Goulburn Valley, across the border into NSW.

Near Jerilderie

Took the Talimba Rd as an alternative to the Newell Hwy between Ardlethan and West Wyalong

Rest area near Marsden. Last time I stopped here was 5 years ago and I was waiting for a tow truck. Better luck this time.

In Forbes on the Hwy is the McFeeter's Motor Museum. I've ridden through here at least a dozen times in the past 7 years. Every time I ride past, it's too early, or too late, or too hot, or too cold, or I'm running late, but today... I didn't have an excuse not to stop and take a walk around.

Most of the vehicles are owned by the McFeeter family, but the motorcycles are on load from other collectors.

Friday morning I set out at daybreak. Heading north.

Street art in Gulargambone

IMG_1540.JPG

Despite a lot of green grass yesterday, a lot of NSW is deep in drought. It's hard to tell, because every time I've been through this area this is what it looks like.

IMG_1542.JPG

The Castlereagh River being enjoyed by ducks.

IMG_1545.JPG

IMG_1547.JPG

I turned right into the Gwydir Hwy where a caravan had come to it's end.

IMG_1550.JPG

The Barwon River in Collarenebri defies the talk of a drought.

IMG_1551.JPG

From Collarenebri to Moree is a lot of this

IMG_1553.JPG

Upbeat about the weather in Garah.

IMG_1555.JPG

IMG_1563.JPG

A new ANZAC museum has opened in Meandarra. I didn't have time to go in to check it out

IMG_1565.JPG

but the town's connection to a millitary past is obvious in the park.

IMG_1568.JPG

Another dry creek bed in Condamine

IMG_1569.JPG

I stopped for the night in Miles Qld, arriving just on Sunset. A quick walk around town revealed another motel in town had a lockup car garage attached to each motel room.

MVIMG_20190802_174645.jpg

Miles is a town of about 1700 people, with 2 pubs a couple of motels, a few shops in the main drag, a couple of petrol stations and a single attraction, the "Miles Historical Village". How exciting it must be for the School students, to have the anticipation of a 2 week wait before they go to the only attraction in town, which is literally at the end of the street.

First stop saturday monring was Chinchilla, which is the watermelon capital of Australia, well, judging from its' street art.

This metal artwork is constructed of hundreds of farm and workshop odds and ends

IMG_1575.JPG

IMG_1577.JPG

As I reached the town of Tara, the racecourse was filled with hundreds of campers, tents, trailers and caravans. The Annual Tara Camel Races were on this weekend.

IMG_1581.JPG

The Condamine River in Cecil Plains hasn't seen water for quite some time.

IMG_1585.JPG

There are Km after km of cotton fields

IMG_1587.JPG

I havne't seen any sign of rain, but the pooled water on the road this morning tells a different story.

IMG_1588.JPG

IMG_1593.JPG

Stopped at the local motorcross track for a few snaps.

IMG_1603.JPG

IMG_1596.JPG

Then headed into the Gold Coast for the night and the motel rooms were traded for a mattress on the floor of a mates apartment.

Sunday morning started with a trip to the Yatala Pie Shop for breakfast.

On the Beaudesert road.

IMG_1605.JPG

Every time i've ridden the Mt Lindesay Hwy I've turned off at Woodenbong. Today will be the day I continue west instead.

IMG_1606.JPG

Some nice curves

IMG_1610.JPG

IMG_1611.JPG

Stopped in Stanthorpe for the night. Queenslands coldest town.

IMG_20190804_163512.jpg

MVIMG_20190804_165436.jpg

There was a small bushfire a few km south of the town but most of the smoke had cleared by evening

Good pics, and not too many words, they way I like it, keep it coming Nev.

A lot of cars for one family, like a motor museum Helen and I visited on Deep Lodge Montana in 2017. There must've been 200 old and newer cars owned by one family - it just ain't fair!!

Some mighty big tyres on that truck, too!

Mt Lindsay Highway a nice piece of road. In really, really poor nick 1st time I rode, the road authority has been slowly upgrading it, 2nd time a bit better, 3rd time getting almost okay, can't wait for the next ride.

Not far from the bridge is the turn-off to Urbenville via the Tooloom Road, you may not have ridden this ride, but worthwhile the next - in better nick than MLH.

Jo and I also stopped at the Deer Lodge Motor Museum on our 2015 trip. I posted a bunch of photos in that ride report.

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep Tooloom Rd in mind next time i'm in the area.

When I left Stanthorpe at 7am Monday, the thermometer in the park was showing -1.6 degrees. An old bridge near Tenterfield.

IMG_1612.JPG

The New England Hwy wasn't too busy and there was only a little fog.

IMG_1615.JPG

Which soon cleared to another beautiful day.

IMG_1616.JPG

Stopped briefly in Tamworth

IMG_1619.JPG

The road between Premer and Caroona is nothing special to the naked eye, but something about this stretch of road appeals to me and I'm always happy riding down here.

The Premer Pub

Down a sidestreet is this house which once had a mural of a railway scene painted on the side, but it has now badly faded.

IMG_1624.JPG

Ever since the first time I rode through Coolah, almost 20 years ago, this old shelter has been threatening to fall over.

IMG_1627.JPG

Near Cobbora, another creek desperately in need of water.

IMG_1628.JPG

I never get sick of seeing this frog on it's tricycle outside a scrap dealer in Molong.

6:30am in Boorowa. The sun is almost up, and the temperature is down

IMG_1643.JPG

The fog was thick, limiting speed to about 70kph, and everything was white, with a coating of ice and the temperature dropped a couple more degrees.

IMG_1645.JPG

I stopped to capture the sunrise.

IMG_1653.JPG

PANO_20190806_070930.vr.jpg

By the time i got down to the Hume Hwy, the moisture in the air was freezing onto any surface in it's path.

But that didn't mean it wasn't going to be a beautiful day for riding :)

IMG_1657.JPG

And just to show that it can't be sunny every day, every where... The last photo of the trip, cresting the hill in Cragieburn, with the CBD in the distance, and a clouded sky, the first i've seen for 6 days.
