A quick look at the map shows there wasn't much north-south progress made... but things rather turned into a feast of sweet, little backroads
...and the kind of scenery that just puts the brakes on "progress".

The Weathergods are called upon...and promise a massive wall-of-water approaching from the South.
Just perfect for a dawdler of a day...with fast bail-out options on hand, when needed.

The Tukituki-Trail sounds interesting and the Swingbridge across the Tukituki River just south of town might be worth a look...

...before tacking west towards Dannevirke and the delights of the Te Uri Rd.
Here's a highly recommendable mix of farm + forest country, the vistas guaranteed by staying close to the ridge lines, a little asphalt each end....and with a very enjoyable (and extensive) "guts-section" . HEAVEN!

Find of the day would have to be the partially narrow gravel rollercoaster of the Mangahei Rd. and Ngapaeruru Rd half-loop
adding very neatly to the delights of the Te Uri Rd..

While the saying is true that there is no bad or boring road anywhere around here...SOME DO STICK OUT!

Hi Hans :)

Yes, what's coming up over the next few days will be pretty familiar stuff for you.
About to post up another day's worth in a few minutes....then we're getting closer to Castlepoint and other places further south.

Running south on quickly drying roads under a speckled-blue sky, last night's rain is soon forgotten.
With a lack of gravel roads in that direction, Top Grass Rd. is a close second for deserted country lanes, though....while following the line of the Ruahine-hills to the right.

A few kilometers of SH2 and it's back into the sweet country-twisties on the Pahiatua-Pongaroa Rd., tacking east into the backblocks again.

Back on gravel towards Coonoor, looking for the next climb up the ridges.

Towai Rd......HEHH?? :wot:
A limeworks right on top of the hill?
Like the Denniston coal mine on the South Island Westcoast, Unzud seems to mine away the top of the hills while everybody else on the globe is digging pits and tunnels W-)

Just while we're rolling past a mighty roar and a foul-smelling yellow-ish cloud cut into the serene farming-hills...
There's a truck-sized pile of bagged sulphur around the back of the place. And a huge rotating drum with a whooshing gas-burner firing into its guts...

Once more things are looking bleak up there....time to pull up at Pongaroa, the planned stay for the next 2 nights.
While the only "beds-in-town", the Puketoi Lodge, seem a bit of a strange affair at the start....

A bit of B+B mixed with some glam-packers, add some school-camp before a good shake and a garnish with traveling workers lodge.
https://www.puketoilodge.nz/

There's a small shop/ cafe 50m away... the pub another 50m the other way....and fuel 50m the third way. Which makes for all possible ways out of town...

The lodge provides everything one could think of. A clean place to stay, a modern stainless kitchen, shower and amenities, a huge pile of chopped firewood/ kindling/ firelighters, stacks of towels, made beds, huge TV and tech stuff corner, fast WiFi, a biiig timber deck at front....just keep it as clean and functional as you found it!
Working on a principle of "Fair Use + Honesty" seems a bit of a 1960s throwback...I REALLY hope that this works out for the owners as it's not
the common way of how society functions nowadays.
In short, it's a fantastic, if a little quirky, place with all mod cons, just bring your personal stuff and be prepared to clean up after yourself.
