Anyway, what a great way to spend the day. We did something like 95km - maybe 75km of that off road in about 4 and half hours. Great entertainment for about 4 litres of fuel!

And yeah, I'm a little sore in places today...

THAT'S what it's about!

I always wondered what's around in the area as there don't seem to be too many formed tracks/ roads (going by SatView).
Curious what area you'll pick next.

Nearing the falls, we turned off onto Fields track for the sublime ride up the hill to the usual photo stop.

Love Fields Track...and Oruakukuru Rd. a bit further north, which has got awesome views across the farmland to Ruapehu.
You've got some choice riding country there.

There's plenty more tracks in there apparently. Some in better condition than others. Luckily Colin knows them like the back of his hand - he probably made some of them ;)

Just wondering....is it a known/ well frequented area for the "outdoorsies" (hikers/ 4wd etc) or rather more a timber/ plantation/ commercial area?

I believe (might not quite have nailed it) it's a mix of scenic reserve and pine plantations. Certainly plenty of mountain bikers, 4WD's and other trail bikes around.

Apparently a lot of the roads were put in for forestry and haven't been maintained. The pines didn't look that flash in places - haven't been looked after either. Eventually someone might want to extract some $ out of the trees so the tracks will probably need sorting out too.

At the moment there's a heap of fun to be had in there - gotta get back down there again...

Thanks for that...looking at maps and Sat View etc. doesn't show much.

The only experience I had is 25+ years old...., driving a 3ton Diesel-camper across from Upper Hut to the Kapiti coast on a tiny, narrow road (most likely Akatarawa Rd. but not sure)

Yeah, looks like it. They should get rid of Mondays.
More of your crappy NZ weather and roads then...

What a nice loop, just traced it on the old, frazzled paper maps.
Any loop that contains Pori Rd. is a good one, really....and Coonoor, and.... :chug:
