Bikes were packed and loaded Sunday morning. We were heading west, so to start the trip we went as far as Maribyrnong in the morning and stopped for lunch with Jo's parents, then headed out on the western Hwy. Uneventful trip to Horsham only stopping for a break in Beaufort.

Monday morning we headed out through Natimuk to Frances. Just outside Natimuk the scenery is framed.

After a tour through the Adelaide Hills we stopped for the night in Hahndorf

No sooner were we off our bikes at the motel then another couple of bikes turned up. One rider came over and had a chat. He introduced himself and said something about Corryong... It was Aprilia Bob and Uncle Rod from the OpenRoad Tourers.

Headed north through the hills to Gawler, than across some dirt to the Hwy just south of Port Wakefield.

IMG_0032.JPG

The road started off as a wide graded dirt track but degraded by the km.

Wednesday morning we queued up at Wallaroo for ferry to Lucky Bay.

IMG_20170315_081900.jpg

The bikes just get nosed into the vertical supports and then tied down to a D shackle on the railing. I wasn't too sure about how many tiedowns they'd have so I bought some at a bike shop in Kadina the night before, but it turned out they had sufficient. I don't have any good tiedowns at home anyhow so they'll come in handy.

Off the ferry and west to Lock.

IMG_0041.JPG

From Lock we headed south to Port Lincoln where we stayed 2 nights to see the sights, relax, and visit a mate who I worked with at a previous job for 20 years who has moved here.

Next morning we obtained a key to the gate on Whalers Way and set off down the unmaintained road around the southern tip of the Yorke Peninsular.

The road was very rocky, and partly sandy, and when it wasn't rocky or partly sandy it was very sandy.

That very small looking ferry must be exciting if crossing the Spencer Gulf when it's windy.

we had a very calm day, but yeah, the boat did move around a bit. fortunately there was a northerly wind so not much opportunity for the swell to build up in the top of the gulf I guess. You'd know Steve F too, who now runs a fishing and outdoors shop over here in PL.

Friday morning we left Port Lincoln and headed north. Lots of 42 & 46 wheeler road trains on the road over here.

Stopped for a break at the Arno Bay turnoff.

IMG_0059.JPG

Headed north through Cleve where we fuelled up. The wind was strong and fuel economy poor this morning.

IMG_0061.JPG

The road heading out of Cleve to the north was a ripper run of hills and turns for about 10km before settling back into the long straight roads that SA has in abundance.

After a refuel in Port Augusta we headed further north to Quorn for the night.

IMG_0074.JPG

The main street of Quorn has 3 operating pubs almost in a row (the second to left building in this pic has not operated as a hotel for some time). THere is another pub further up the street which is currently not trading. Further up the road in Hawker, the only pub is currently undergoing restructuring ownership/finance and also not trading, so the locals have to travel to Quorn or Blinman for a cold beer.
