...... then onto the Kidman Way and into Hillston for the night. I wouldn't make the next town (Cobar) before dusk and there'd be lots of furry obstacles on these roads. Hillston is a handsome little town with some art-deco buildings, on the banks of the Lachlan River -

Plenty of roos and feral goats kept the speed moderate. Then the sun came up -

Cute little place, Hillston is ...and the last fuel before Cobar, there's nothing at all along the way (or rather, there wasn't a few years ago).
The mid-way roadhouse was closed.

Those wandering flocks of goats, I'll never forget...
Coming home from that V-Strom meet in Cobar and trying to make it home in one hit, I did those 255k's in 1hr40, sputtering into Hillston on a dry tank having wrung the neck of the 1000Strom all the way with various eye-popping emergency slow-downs when faced with a pack of those stupid goats wandering across the road...there are also some bone-jarring whoopsies , dry creek beds and all that, along that stretch.
Made the Vee sit on the blocks....

Great memories...thanks for the yarn!!:chug:
Love the Lancia-pic

the Lancia Auriella from memory was one of the most beautiful cars of the time and still is.. the superleggerra looks like it has been abroad as the tape on the nearside headlight denotes that it has been o/s and the tape is to dim the offset headlight beam :)

There was an Auriella there too, and many others, I just liked the Superleggerra. There was also a very old, huge, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang styled Lancia, which paused only briefly - too brief for me to frame a pic - before thundering off.

Return trip (day #4)

6:00am, headed south down the Mt Lindsay Highway against a stream of commuters. The family are catching a later flight. I should say now that my new Strike GPS stayed at home, as there's no room for both its bodged fitting and my camera-tank bag, and no time to fix before the start of the trip. Using paper maps was no problem coming up. Was not to be going home ........

Lions Road. Cold fog hid any early views -

Lions Road travels up & down farmland while still in Queensland -

At the NSW border, it turns to rainforest. Note the security cameras in the middle of nowhere. Presumably someone's tried to pinch the donations tin, which I contributed to -

Bit of an explanation at the Border Loop picnic area -

Onto Casino for a half-strength soy latte with extra froth - isn't that what all BMW riders have ? :bees: Only joking, make that a strong flat white for me.

Turned west onto the surprisingly tight & twisty Bruxner Highway to Tenterfield. Through Peter Allan's home town then continued west. Droved cattle near Black Swan Billabong -

14594257622_e6e994240a_b.jpg

Turned south through Ashford, west at Inverell, SW at Delungra to the Gwydir River at Bingara.

Discovered here that a Shark Evoline is ball-shaped when flipped. I flip its lid then put it on the ground while grabbing the camera and a choccy bar from the tankbag. I look up to observe my helmet rolling down the hill, under the fence, gathering pace toward the river. Undignified fence-vault then jog to catch it up. That could have ended in a right SNAFU

A couple of U-turns in Biranong looking for the Mt Kaputar road before being rescued by a friendly ute-driving local who guided me out of town :so .

The recently-asphalted Mt Kaputar road passes through a picturesque wide valley -

Those cameras are on most of the minor roads crossing the NSW/QLD border along the border ranges. They're run by the Dept of Primary Industries watching for people moving livestock from one state to the other.

Day #5

Short hop west to Wee Waa then SW onto the Pilliga road, by which time the sun was up -

Soon there were plenty of billabongs to support lots of bird life - flocks of cockatoos, galahs, ducks, ibis. The ducks had an unnerving habit of attempting liftoff then trying to out-fly you by madly flapping & quacking ahead in your exact line, at about helmet height -

14594185592_456fe378bc_b.jpg

Pilliga is not a place to linger - think Wolf Creek.

The road to Coonamble might have been empty of wheeled traffic, but it was like a furry obstacle tunnel, which kept the speed well in check. As well as the usual culprits, feral horses also appeared. Bloody hell -

14594169192_65e361fa5f_b.jpg

A coffee stop at Coonamble, where they know how to build a proper verandah.

14571796726_e75de47b22_b.jpg

South down the entertaining Warren Road to its namesake, then onto a tiny road to Tottenham. Tottenham is the geographical centre of NSW, which might explain its excess of roadsigns -

14594818845_372604a597_b.jpg

Continued along the Bogan Way (true name) to Tullamore, for lunch in this cafe, decorated like your great-aunt's loungeroom. The proprietor talked me through her long set of Kimberley holiday snaps as I tried to find a polite interval to make my excuses -

After a couple of false starts, eventually found the Yarrabandai Road then took a short detour back to Ootha, to look at the Utes In The Paddock http://www.utesinthepaddock.com.au/ -

On through Forbes and into Grenfell. While sitting in a wayside next to a petrol station, brain fade meant I didn't fill up after short-counting the remaining back-road kms to Temora via Morangarell :stupid: . Realised the mistake with about 70km to go with 60km to empty showing. In the gathering gloom, then rain :weather: , this was the moment when the headlight globe blew W-) . The next ~hour was spent in the dilemma of much-reduced speed to conserve fuel, but not so slow that darkness would overtake me, all the while feeling vaguely lost. I know some Austourers love this sort of brinkmanship. Not me  .

Into wet Temora on fumes, just after dusk, I put 19.05 litres of lovely 98-octane into the Bender's 19 litre tank !

Day #6

Waited till after dawn, cold rain continuing, before starting on the headlight-less Bender.

A bit bleak on the Coolamon Road -

14591493261_636f8f99f3_b.jpg

But at least lush greenery has reappeared, near Berry Jerry -

14408177078_654b7b6d4f_b.jpg

More u-turns in Coolamon vainly looking for Millwood Road, before giving up & heading toward Narrandera in the constant drizzle, then turning south on signposted Brushwood Road -

14594105462_f0a18e80c6_b.jpg

Quiet little roads passed in a partly-frozen haze :cold: . Through Lockhart, Howlong, then over the border back into Victoria before winding up in historic Chiltern -

The end of the Slow Roads :( -

14592863234_cc42bf9a22_b.jpg

Onto the mind-numbing Hume Freeway to Seymour, for a quick nibble outside its old jail. Would you believe this was still in use in 1962 ? -

14408159968_9d171124e8_b.jpg

Then to Yea before joining the conveyer-belt of afternoon Yarra Valley winery traffic home, where I fired up the Coonara and toasted my toes while smelling the roast lamb in the oven :) :woot:
